Your Smile Makeover Starts Here — Ashton-under-Lyne
You see it in the mirror. That crack you’ve hidden for years. The gap you cover when you laugh. The colour that’s never quite right despite the toothpaste promises. Ashton-under-Lyne is full of people who’ve decided to stop hiding. They came to Walmsley Dental and got the smile they’ve always wanted — sometimes in as little as two visits.
We’re not a corporate chain promising miracle whitening in 10 minutes. We’re a family-run practice on Manchester Road in Droylsden — just 10 minutes from Ashton town centre — and we’ve been transforming smiles since 1984. Our Instagram (@walmsleydental) is full of real before-and-after cases from real Ashton patients who decided their smile was worth the investment.
Composite bonding from £350 per tooth (six-tooth smile makeover from £1,800). Porcelain veneers from £750 per tooth (full smile from £6,000). Bespoke composite preview included — you see and feel the result before any drilling happens.
What changed for Ashton patients who got a smile makeover
The cases we see most often from the Ashton area:
- The gap or chip that’s been there since school — composite bonding closes it in one visit, no pain, no long recovery. £300–£350 per tooth.
- The coffee-stained smile — a combination of professional whitening (£350) plus composite bonding to reshape and brighten (£350/tooth) gives a dramatic transformation in 4 weeks.
- The asymmetrical front teeth — bespoke smile design shows you exactly how we’d reshape them, then composite sculpting makes it happen in 90 minutes.
- The “smile lines” that show too much gum — we reshape the visible tooth length to balance your smile — what you see in the mirror changes completely.
- The complete smile transformation — sometimes it’s all of the above: whitening + bonding across 6–8 front teeth, or porcelain veneers for a more dramatic, longer-lasting result.
Every single one of these patients came in uncertain. They left with a photo to prove it was real.
Why Ashton patients choose us over other cosmetic providers
You see the result before you commit. We offer two preview options. First, a bespoke smile design consultation where Dr Edward Walmsley uses clinical photos and study photos to show you the exact proposed outcome on your own teeth — with colour and shape options you can change in real time. Second, for patients who want to feel it as well as see it, a temporary composite mock-up where we sculpt the proposed design onto your teeth so you can live with it for a few days, take selfies, even show your partner — then come back and lock it in as permanent bonding or veneers.
Transparent pricing, no surprises. You leave the consultation with a written quote. A six-tooth smile makeover is typically £1,800–£2,100 for composite bonding, or £6,000–£7,500 for full porcelain veneers. We’re not hiding costs in “treatment plan reviews” or surprise add-ons. If you choose to go ahead, you know exactly what it costs and how long it takes.
You’re seeing the same dentist for 40+ years. Dr Edward Walmsley has been treating cosmetic cases since he qualified and took over the practice from his father Stephen in the 1990s. He’s not a junior associate who’ll move on in two years. You see him for your consultation, your treatment, your photo, and your future touch-ups. That continuity matters for smile design — he remembers what you wanted, and he gets better at delivering it.
Family-run, no corporate pressure. We’re not hitting KPIs to upsell you into veneers you don’t need, or bonding that’s too white for your face. We show you options and let you choose. Many Ashton patients tell us they chose us specifically because we didn’t hard-sell them.
Instagram proof. Follow @walmsleydental and you’ll see real Ashton cases — before-and-afters, smile timelines, even video content of bonding cases so you can see the work in motion. That’s not marketing fluff; it’s actual patients who said yes to being featured.
Smile makeover treatments available
Composite edge bonding — £300 per tooth. Ideal for chips, small gaps, or slight reshaping of the tooth edge. A single-visit treatment using tooth-coloured resin sculpted directly onto your existing tooth. Perfect for one or two problem teeth. Lasts 5–8 years with standard care.
Composite full-face bonding — £350 per tooth. Covers the entire visible surface of the tooth to change shape, colour, and proportions all at once. Ideal for a dramatic smile transformation without veneers. A full six-tooth front smile typically costs £1,800–£2,100 and takes 1–2 visits. Lasts 5–8 years; small chips can be repaired without replacing the whole tooth.
Tooth whitening (custom-tray home) — £350. Professional-strength gel in custom-fitted trays — significantly more effective than over-the-counter kits. Two weeks of nightly use. Often paired with bonding or veneers to lock in a brighter shade. Top-up syringes £30 each.
Porcelain veneers — from £750 per tooth. Thin custom-made shells bonded to the front of your teeth. More durable than bonding, stain-resistant, capable of more dramatic transformations. A full smile (8–10 veneers) typically costs £6,000–£7,500 and takes two visits over 2–3 weeks. Lasts 10–15 years or longer.
Whitening + bonding combination — from £2,150. Professional whiten first, then composite bonding matched to your new shade. The combination is often more affordable and less invasive than full veneers while still delivering a dramatic transformation.
Smile design consultation with bespoke composite preview — free. A 30–45 minute appointment where we take clinical photos, show you a real-life trial smile of the outcome, and hand you a written treatment plan and fixed quote. Includes intraoral photography so you can see the detail of what we’re proposing.
How to get started — Ashton-under-Lyne patients
Step 1: Book a smile design consultation. Call 0161 370 2869 or use the contact form below. We’ll give you a 30–45 minute slot with Dr Edward Walmsley. No pressure, no upsell — just an honest chat about what you want and what’s possible.
Step 2: See your smile before committing. We’ll show you a bespoke composite preview of the proposed outcome using clinical photography and study photos. If you want to feel as well as see it, we can do a temporary composite mock-up on your teeth so you can live with the design for a few days.
Step 3: Get a written quote. You leave with a fixed price, a timeline, and a treatment plan. Payment plans with 0% finance are available for cases over £1,000.
Step 4: Transform your smile. Depending on your treatment, you’re looking at 1–2 visits for composite bonding (90 minutes per visit) or 2 visits over 2–3 weeks for porcelain veneers. Then photos. Lots of photos. Probably Instagram.
Smile makeover FAQs
How much does a smile makeover actually cost?
It depends on which teeth and which treatment. A six-tooth composite bonding smile makeover starts from around £1,800. If you add professional whitening first, it’s typically £2,150–£2,450. Full porcelain veneer cases (8–10 teeth) run £6,000–£7,500. We always give you a fixed written quote after consultation, so there are no surprises.
What’s the difference between composite bonding and veneers?
Composite bonding is sculpted directly onto your existing tooth in one or two visits, costs less, and is easily repairable if you chip it. Porcelain veneers are custom-made in a lab, fitted over two visits, last longer (10–15 years), and don’t stain. Bonding is great for quick transformations and smaller changes; veneers are ideal if you want a dramatic, longer-lasting result. Many patients do bonding first to test the look, then upgrade to veneers later.
Can I see what my smile will look like before treatment?
Yes — that’s part of every consultation. We use clinical photography and trial-smile composite to show you a realistic preview of the outcome on your own teeth. You can see different shade options, different tooth shapes, and even different smile lines all before any drilling happens. If you want to try it on your actual teeth temporarily before committing, we can do a composite mock-up that you can live with for a few days.
How long does the treatment take?
Composite bonding: 1–2 visits, around 90 minutes per visit for a full smile. Porcelain veneers: 2 visits about 2–3 weeks apart (one to prep, one to fit). Whitening: 2 weeks of nightly home use. A combination smile makeover is typically 4–8 weeks from first consultation to finished smile. We give you a personalised timeline at consultation.
How long will my smile makeover last?
Composite bonding typically lasts 5–8 years before needing a polish or refresh. It can be repaired — small chips don’t require full replacement. Porcelain veneers last 10–15 years or longer. Both are affected by your habits: biting nails, chewing pens, and grinding can shorten the lifespan. We recommend regular hygiene appointments to keep everything looking fresh.
Will my bonding or veneers stain?
Composite bonding can pick up surface stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and curries — this is easily polished away at your hygiene appointments. Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant (the porcelain is glass-like) but benefit from regular polishing too. Either way, we recommend professional cleaning every 6 months.
Do I need to have my teeth whitened before bonding or veneers?
If you want a brighter smile overall, yes. We whiten first, then match the bonding or veneers to your new lighter shade. Composite bonding cannot be re-whitened after it’s bonded, so it’s important to lock in the colour you want upfront. Porcelain can’t be whitened either, so getting the shade right at consultation is key.
What if I have social anxiety about smiling for the “before” photo?
We get this question more than you’d think. The before photo is for you — to prove the transformation when you look back in six months. If you’d rather not be on Instagram, that’s completely fine; we just take a private before photo for your own records. If you do want to be featured, we can make it anonymous (close-up only, no face visible). Your comfort comes first.

Common Questions About General Dentistry
What is the Walmsley Practice Plan?
For £17.50 a month, the Practice Plan covers your routine check-ups, your hygiene visits and worldwide emergency cover — the easiest way to spread the cost of staying on top of your dental health. Most of our regular patients are on the plan.
How often should I have a check-up?
Most adults need a check-up every 6–12 months — your dentist will set the right interval based on your gum health, decay risk and personal history. Practice Plan members get their check-ups included.
Are you an NHS practice?
We're predominantly private but do hold limited NHS capacity. NHS places open and close depending on availability — ask our reception team what's open right now. Children's NHS treatment is unaffected.
Can my children be seen here?
Absolutely. We see children from age 1 upwards and encourage early, positive visits so they grow up unafraid of the dentist. NHS treatment for under-18s is free.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe toothache, swelling, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost crown, or any trauma to the mouth. Registered patients get same-day appointments. Call 0161 370 2869 as early in the day as possible.
Are root canals painful?
Modern root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than a regular filling — the procedure relieves pain rather than causing it. Local anaesthetic and gentle technique keep you comfortable. IV sedation with Dr Eva is available if you'd prefer.
How long do crowns, fillings and dentures last?
A well-placed crown can last 15+ years, composite fillings 7–10+ years, and well-fitted dentures 5–10 years with regular relines. Longevity depends on home care, diet and your six-month check-ups.
I'm a nervous patient — can you help?
Yes. We see anxious patients every day. Many find that a chat and a check-up with no commitment is enough to break the ice. For more involved treatment, in-house IV sedation with Dr Eva makes the visit easier.

We offer Guided Biofilm Therapy as our modern hygiene method, plus Periodontal Care Packages for gum disease, gum surgery and regeneration techniques in-house. Dr Edward Walmsley is completing a Diploma in Periodontology at the Rena Wadia Perio School, so advanced cases stay with us rather than being referred out.

Dr Edward Walmsley is completing a Diploma in Periodontology at the Rena Wadia Perio School. Gum surgery, regeneration techniques and Periodontal Care Packages stay in-house — no external referrals.
Verity Hughes and Alex Korak are our two dedicated hygienists — the people who'll see you for every clean. They deliver Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) — the modern, gentle, biofilm-targeted alternative to traditional scale-and-polish — alongside routine hygiene, airflow stain removal, periodontal charting and maintenance hygiene after gum disease treatment.
For more advanced cases, Dr Edward Walmsley provides Periodontal Care Packages, gum surgery and regeneration techniques — work most practices refer out. Serving Droylsden, Audenshaw, Denton, Failsworth, Openshaw, Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Mossley and across Tameside & Manchester. Call 0161 370 2869 to book.
Common Questions About Hygiene & Gum Health
How often should I see the hygienist?
Most adults benefit from a hygiene appointment every 6 months. Patients with a history of gum disease, smokers, or those with implants may need 3–4 month intervals. We'll set the right rhythm at your check-up.
Is hygiene included in the Practice Plan?
Yes — for £17.50 a month, your routine hygiene visits and check-ups are both included, plus worldwide emergency cover. Most of our regular patients are on the plan.
What's the difference between hygiene and gum disease treatment?
A hygiene visit is preventive — keeping healthy gums healthy. Gum disease treatment goes deeper: detailed measurements, scaling and root planing under each gum, sometimes local antibiotics. If your gums bleed, recede or you have loose teeth, you may need more than a hygiene visit.
Do bleeding gums always mean gum disease?
Usually, yes. Healthy gums don't bleed. Bleeding when you brush or floss is often the earliest sign of gingivitis — reversible at this stage with good cleaning and a hygiene visit. Left untreated it can progress to periodontitis, where bone is lost and teeth become loose.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis (the early stage) is fully reversible. Periodontitis (the advanced stage) can be brought under control with the right treatment and maintenance, but the bone loss already done cannot be regrown. The earlier we catch it, the more of your gum and bone we can save.
What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?
GBT is a modern, evidence-based hygiene method developed by EMS. It uses warm water + fine erythritol powder (AIRFLOW) and a gentle ultrasonic device (PIEZON) to remove plaque and stain. It's far more comfortable than traditional scale-and-polish, gets into places conventional tools can't reach, and is the standard our hygienists Verity and Alex use as default.
Do you do gum surgery and regeneration?
Yes — Dr Edward Walmsley provides gum surgery and regeneration techniques in-house. Most general practices refer these cases to an external periodontist; we keep them with you. Ask for a Periodontal Care Package assessment to find out what's right for your case.
I want implants but I've had gum disease — can I still have them?
Yes, in most cases — but only once the gum disease is stabilised. We treat the gums first (often with a Periodontal Care Package), then plan the implants. Doing both under one roof means we know your full picture, not just half of it.

Common Questions About Orthodontics
How long does Invisalign take?
Most cases finish in 6–12 months. Mild cases can be done in as little as 3–4 months; complex cases may need 18+ months.
What's the difference between Invisalign and SureSmile?
Both are clear aligner systems. Invisalign has the longest track record; SureSmile is a strong alternative often more cost-effective. We offer both and recommend the right one for your case.
Will clear aligners affect my speech?
Most patients adjust within 1–2 days. After that there's no noticeable impact on speech, eating, or daily life.
Are clear aligners right for me?
Clear aligners suit most mild-to-moderate cases. We'll take an iTero® scan at your consultation and show you the projected outcome before you commit.
Do you do fixed metal and ceramic braces in-house?
Yes — Dr Emma Walmsley personally places complex fixed metal and ceramic braces for both adults and children. No external specialist referral required.
Can I have orthodontics on the NHS?
Adult orthodontics is generally private. Children's orthodontics may qualify on the NHS based on clinical need — see our Children's Braces page.

Common Questions About Dental Implants
How long do dental implants last?
With good care and regular check-ups, implants can last 15–25 years — often a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10–15 years.
Is the procedure painful?
Placed under effective local anaesthetic. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure and mild soreness afterwards, similar to a tooth extraction.
How long does the whole process take?
From initial consultation to final crown, usually 3–6 months depending on healing and whether bone grafting is needed.
Will I be without teeth during healing?
In most cases we provide temporary teeth so you're never without a smile during the healing phase.
Can I have implants if I have bone loss?
Often yes. We use CBCT scanning to assess your bone and can use advanced techniques or grafting when needed.
Do you offer finance?
0% finance is available on plans over £1,000, subject to standard credit approval.
What's the difference between implants and a bridge?
Implants replace the root as well as the tooth and don't damage neighbouring teeth. Bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support — which means grinding down healthy teeth.
What happens if an implant fails?
Failure is rare (around 95–98% success rate). If it does happen, we'll support you with a clear plan — most can be successfully replaced.

Common Questions About Facial Aesthetics
Why have facial aesthetics at a dental practice?
Dentists train extensively in facial anatomy — nerves, muscles, vasculature — from the very first year of dental school. That clinical grounding is exactly what's needed for safe, precise aesthetic injections. Add in the regulated, sterile environment of a CQC-registered dental practice, and it's arguably the safest setting for medical aesthetics.
What is thread lifting?
Thread lifting uses fine absorbable threads inserted under the skin to physically lift and reposition sagging tissue. We offer both non-surgical face lift (jawline, cheeks, brow) and non-surgical neck & chin lift. Done under local anaesthetic, around an hour per area, and — using the latest thread technology — results typically last up to 2 years.
What are polynucleotides and skin boosters?
Polynucleotides are a new generation of regenerative injectables that work with the skin's own biology — rather than filling lines or paralysing muscles, they stimulate the skin to produce more collagen and improve in quality, hydration and firmness from the inside. Typically a course of 2–3 sessions, 3–4 weeks apart, with results building over 2–3 months and lasting around 6–9 months before a maintenance session. Great for under-eye crepiness, neck quality, and skin that's lost its bounce.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?
Most patients see results last 3–4 months. Regular treatment over time can also weaken the targeted muscles, meaning the gap between treatments often extends.
How long do dermal fillers last?
It depends on the product and where it's placed. Typically: lip filler 6–12 months, cheek and jawline filler 9–18 months, and the new generation of harder hyaluronic acid fillers can last longer in dense areas like the chin or jaw.
Will I look overdone or "fake"?
Not with us. Our entire approach is built around subtlety — we'd rather you came back for a top-up than over-treat in a single visit. The goal is people noticing you look well-rested or refreshed, not that you've had work done.
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
Through a free consultation. We assess what's actually happening in your face (volume loss, sagging, muscle activity, skin quality) and recommend what's appropriate — including sometimes recommending you don't need treatment yet. No high-pressure selling, ever.
Is there any recovery time?
Anti-wrinkle and filler — minimal. A little redness or pinpoint bruising that fades within hours to a couple of days. Thread lifting has slightly more — mild bruising and tenderness for up to a week, but you can return to work the same day.
Can facial aesthetics be combined with cosmetic dentistry?
Yes — and it's one of the genuine advantages of having both delivered by the same clinician. We can plan your facial and dental treatments together so the proportions and balance look right. Common combination: composite bonding + lip filler, or a smile makeover + jawline contouring.

For more advanced cases, Dr Edward Walmsley provides Periodontal Care Packages, gum surgery and regeneration techniques — work most practices refer out.
