We’ve been implanting teeth in Greater Manchester since 1984. We’re family-owned by Dr Edward Walmsley and Emma Walmsley, we hold a 4.9★ Google rating from 340+ patient reviews, and we’ve placed hundreds of All-on-4 cases across Manchester, Tameside, and surrounding areas. Unlike corporate implant centres, you’ll see the same surgeon from your first consultation to your final check-up five years down the line.
What is All-on-4? A Quick Overview
All-on-4 is a fixed full-arch implant technique that gives patients a complete set of upper or lower teeth anchored to just four dental implants per arch. Here’s the difference from what you might be used to:
- Dentures: Removable, sit on your gums, don’t stop bone loss
- Traditional bridge: Anchored to adjacent teeth, doesn’t replace bone where missing teeth were
- Single implants (6–8 per arch): Individually placed, more expensive, more surgery, longer timeline
- All-on-4: Fixed, non-removable, preserves bone, typically done in one visit, supports the full arch with minimum implant count
The technique places two implants at the front of your jaw and two tilted at the back, which maximizes support and often eliminates the need for bone grafting even in patients with moderate bone loss.
All-on-4 vs Other Options — When Is Each Right?
| Option | Cost | Removable? | Bone preserved? | Timeline | Best for… |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dentures | £1,500–£3,000 | Yes | No — bone shrinks over time | 2–3 weeks | Budget-conscious, short-term solution |
| Traditional bridge | £4,000–£8,000 | No | No | 2–3 weeks | Limited gaps (1–2 teeth), good adjacent teeth |
| 6–8 single implants | £16,500–£22,000 | No | Yes | 6–9 months | Patients with excellent bone, wanting maximum stability |
| All-on-4 | £10,000–£20,000 | No | Yes | 4–6 months (or same-day teeth) | Full-arch loss, moderate bone, best value-to-outcome ratio |
| All-on-6 | £12,000–£24,000 | No | Yes | 4–6 months | Full-arch loss, excellent bone, maximum long-term stability |
Why most patients choose All-on-4: Fixed teeth, bone preserved, no surgery for grafting in most cases, and the price-to-benefit ratio is unbeatable.
All-on-4 vs All-on-6: Which Should You Choose?
All-on-4 is the entry point: Four implants supporting a full arch of teeth. Fewer implants = lower cost, less bone removal needed, faster surgery. Suitable for 85–90% of patients seeking full-arch implants.
All-on-6 offers extra stability: Six implants per arch instead of four, spread across more of your jaw. Recommended if:
- Your bone quality and quantity is excellent (shown by CBCT scan)
- You want maximum long-term stability and load distribution
- You’re willing to invest a bit more for the additional security
- You have a high bite force or grind your teeth
At Walmsley Dental, we’ll recommend one or the other based on your scan and clinical assessment — not on what’s most profitable. Most patients proceed with All-on-4 and are delighted with the outcome.
The All-on-4 Treatment Day: What to Expect
Pre-treatment
Before your implant surgery, you’ll have had a consultation and a CBCT (3D) scan. The CBCT shows us your bone height, density, and the position of your sinuses and nerves — essential for safe, precise planning. We design the exact implant placement on the CBCT before any clinical work.
The morning of surgery
You’ll arrive at the practice. If you’re anxious, we offer local anaesthetic with nitrous oxide (gas and air) or IV sedation — your choice, discussed at consultation. Sedation patients need a driver.
The procedure (typically 2–3 hours)
- Local anaesthetic is administered thoroughly — you’ll feel no pain, only pressure and vibration
- Any damaged teeth are removed (if not already gone)
- Four implants are carefully placed at angles calculated from your CBCT — two vertical at the front, two tilted at the back for maximum grip
- Once all implants are in, we fit a temporary full bridge of teeth (custom-made in advance) to your implants — same-day teeth
- You leave with a fixed full set of teeth, even though they’re temporary
You’ll feel no pain during the procedure — only sensation of pressure, water spray, and vibration. Most patients describe it as less traumatic than a large extraction.
Recovery
- Days 1–3: Mild swelling is normal and peaks around day 3. Soreness is similar to a bad bruise, managed well with ibuprofen. Most people return to light work within 2–3 days.
- Week 1: Stick to soft foods (soups, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, yogurt, smoothies). No hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for the first week.
- Weeks 2–4: Gradually return to normal eating. Avoid very hot foods and aggressive chewing on the new teeth.
- Months 1–4: The implants are integrating with your bone (osseointegration) — you won’t feel this happening, but it’s critical. Avoid smoking entirely during this period; it halves implant success rates.
Temporary vs Final Teeth
The temporary teeth you leave with on day one are made of acrylic and will function fine for eating and speaking. They’re not designed to be permanent — you’ll notice the bite might need tweaking as swelling reduces.
After 4 months of osseointegration, you return for the final appointment. We remove the temporary bridge, take final impressions, and fit your permanent porcelain prosthetic — custom-designed to your exact bite, colour-matched to your face, and built to last 15–20 years.
What’s Included in Your £10,000 All-on-4 Per Arch?
We’re transparent about pricing because there are no surprises. Here’s what £10,000 covers for a single arch (upper or lower):
- Initial consultation — 45–60 mins with Dr Edward Walmsley, full examination, intraoral photos, treatment plan (£50, redeemable if you proceed)
- CBCT 3D scan — precise imaging and implant planning
- Implant placement surgery — four Astra EV (Dentsply Sirona) or Osstem implants, depending on your clinical case
- Temporary prosthetic teeth — same-day teeth, acrylic bridge, fitted immediately after implant placement
- Osseointegration monitoring — 4-month wait, with one check-up visit at 2 weeks post-op
- Final porcelain prosthetic — custom-designed, tooth-coloured, fitted at 4 months
- One year of post-operative hygiene appointments — included, to protect your new teeth
- Repair guarantee — if an implant fails within the first 12 months (rare: under 3%), we replace it at no cost
What’s NOT included:
- Tooth extractions if needed (quoted separately, typically £200–£500)
- Bone grafting or sinus lift (only if your CBCT shows it’s needed, quoted separately)
- Sedation upgrade (local anaesthetic is included; IV sedation is extra)
Both arches: £20,000 (both upper and lower arches placed in one appointment, one set of temporary teeth, two final prosthetics).
After Treatment: 5, 10, 20 Year Care
All-on-4 is a long-term tooth replacement, and we’re here for the whole journey.
Year 1
- 2-week post-op check: Review healing, fine-tune temporary teeth bite
- 3 x hygiene appointments (included): Professional cleaning and gum health monitoring
- You’re learning to care for your new teeth and adapting to how they feel
Years 2–5
- Annual check-up with Dr Edward: Visual inspection, radiographs if needed
- 2 x annual hygiene appointments: Professional clean and periodontal assessment
- The implants are fully integrated and stable; gum health is the main focus
Years 5–10
- Annual check-up continues: Monitoring bone levels and implant security
- Hygiene 1–2 times per year: Gum disease is the #1 threat to implant longevity, so regular professional care is essential
- Prosthetic assessment: The crown may need minor adjustments after a decade of use; wear is usually minor
Years 10–20+
- Check-ups continue: We want to catch any issues early
- Prosthetic replacement likely: After 10–15 years of wear, the porcelain crown may need replacement (the implant itself should be fine for 20+ years)
- Gum health is everything: Patients who attend hygiene appointments consistently have implant success rates above 95% at 20 years
This is why family-run matters: If you place your All-on-4 at a corporate implant centre, will the surgeon still be there in 10 years? Will your case notes be easy to access? At Walmsley Dental, Dr Edward is here for the long term — he’s not rotating between practices, and he’ll have your complete clinical history.
Why Family-Run Beats Corporate Implant Centres (A Polite Truth)
If you’ve been shopping around, you’ll have seen large implant centres in Manchester city centre, often with slick marketing and “specialist” branding. There’s nothing wrong with them — but here are the genuine advantages of choosing a family practice like ours:
1. You see the same surgeon throughout your case
At corporate chains, you might meet Surgeon A for your consultation, Surgeon B for implant placement, and Surgeon C for your crown fitting. Each has access to your notes, but none has the continuity. At Walmsley Dental, Dr Edward will see you from your £50 consultation through to your final check-up. He’ll remember what he placed, why he placed it, and what the plan was.
2. No quarterly KPI targets to upsell
Corporate implant centres are run by private equity or multiple franchises. Surgeons often have targets: “Place 10 All-on-6s this quarter” or “Recommend grafting to 30% of consultations.” We don’t. If All-on-4 is the right choice, we say All-on-4. If bone grafting isn’t needed, we won’t recommend it.
3. Fixed quotes with no surprise add-ons
Our All-on-4 is £10,000 per arch — that’s the price you pay (unless you choose extras like sedation). Some corporate centres quote a low headline price and then add £2,000 for the final prosthetic or £1,500 for the temporary bridge. We don’t do that.
4. Your practice is still here in 20 years
Dr Edward Walmsley is established in the same location since 1984, and not going anywhere. If you need a repair or adjustment in 2035, you’ll still be able to book an appointment with the person who placed your implants. Corporate centres close, merge, or relocate. Surgeons retire or move to other practices.
5. Community accountability
We live and work in Greater Manchester. Half our patients are referrals from existing happy patients. We’re known locally by name, not by a corporate logo. That accountability is real and drives quality.
A Day in the Life: One Patient’s All-on-4 Journey (Anonymised Composite)
Background: Sarah, 58, had worn dentures for 12 years after losing her remaining upper teeth to decay. The dentures were uncomfortable, she felt them slipping when eating or speaking, and she was tired of removing them every night.
Month 1 — Consultation: Sarah came in with anxiety. We spent 45 minutes going through her history, fears, and options. A CBCT scan showed her bone levels were moderate — not ideal, but enough for All-on-4 without grafting. Cost: £10,000 per arch. Sarah was surprised it was less than she’d budgeted.
Month 2 — Surgery day: Sarah had IV sedation (remembered nothing), and we placed four implants in two hours. She left the same day with custom temporary teeth. Swelling peaked on day 3 but was controlled with ibuprofen.
Week 2: Check-up. Healing was perfect. We fine-tuned the bite of her temporary teeth.
Month 5 — Final appointment: Sarah returned after four months of osseointegration. We removed the temporary bridge and fitted her final porcelain prosthetic. She looked in the mirror and cried — “They look like my natural teeth.”
Now, Year 3: Sarah attends hygiene appointments twice a year. She flosses around her new teeth every day and sees Dr Edward annually. She says, “I got my life back.”
Questions to Ask Any Implant Centre Before Committing
Before you book anywhere, ask these questions. Our answers should give you confidence in our approach:
1. Will I see the same surgeon from consultation to finish?
Our answer: Yes. Dr Edward Walmsley will see you at your £50 consultation, place your implants, and fit your final crown. No rotation between clinicians.
2. What implant brand do you use, and why?
Our answer: Astra EV by Dentsply Sirona (Swedish-engineered, gold standard, 20+ year track record) or Osstem (Korean, excellent clinical outcomes, cost-effective). Both are premium, both have over 97% long-term success. We choose based on your bone anatomy, not on margins.
3. Is the price you’ve quoted truly fixed, or are there add-ons?
Our answer: Truly fixed. £10,000 per arch covers everything — implants, surgery, temporary teeth, final crown, one year of hygiene, and aftercare. Extractions and bone grafting (if needed) are quoted separately upfront.
4. What’s included in aftercare?
Our answer: One year of hygiene appointments included in the treatment cost. Annual check-ups with radiographs as needed. Ongoing support for life — you can book appointments whenever you need them.
5. How long has your practice been established?
Our answer: Since 1984 — 40+ years. Founded by Stephen and Heather Walmsley, now run by their son Dr Edward and his wife Emma.
6. Will the surgeon who places my implants still be here in 10 years?
Our answer: Yes. Dr Edward is established and committed to Droylsden for the long term. We’re not a corporate clinic that rotates staff or relocates every few years.
7. What’s your implant success rate, and how do you define “success”?
Our answer: Over 97% integration success for single implants placed by experienced clinicians with premium systems. Long-term success (10+ years) depends heavily on patient compliance with hygiene and regular check-ups — which is why we make both easy and affordable.
8. What happens if an implant fails?
Our answer: Rare, but if it does within 12 months, we replace it at no cost. After 12 months, we’ll discuss options and costs based on what’s needed.
All-on-4 Manchester FAQs
How long does the whole All-on-4 process take? From consultation to final teeth in your mouth: approximately 5 months. Surgery is day one; four months of osseointegration follow; final crown is fitted at month 5. However, you go home with temporary teeth on day one — you’re not without teeth during the healing period.
Will the surgery hurt? The procedure itself is painless — local anaesthetic ensures you feel no pain, only pressure and vibration. Most patients say it’s less uncomfortable than a large extraction. Mild soreness for 2–3 days afterwards is normal and well-managed with ibuprofen.
What can I eat after All-on-4 surgery?
- First week: Soft foods only (soups, mashed potato, scrambled eggs, yogurt, smoothies, protein shakes)
- Week 2–4: Gradually return to normal, avoiding hard or crunchy foods
- Month 1+: Normal eating, though avoid very aggressive chewing on the front teeth for the first four months while the implants integrate
You can eat with your temporary teeth immediately after surgery if you’re careful.
What’s the long-term success rate of All-on-4? Implant integration success (implant bonds to bone) is over 97% for premium systems placed by experienced surgeons. Long-term success at 10+ years is 90–95%, with the main variable being patient compliance with hygiene and check-ups. Smokers and patients with uncontrolled gum disease have lower success rates.
What if one of my four implants fails? Very rare — but if it does within 12 months, we replace it at no cost. The remaining three implants can still support the arch while the new implant integrates. After 12 months, we’ll discuss options.
Can I have All-on-4 if I’ve worn dentures for years? Yes. Many of our patients come from dentures. Your bone may have shrunk slightly, which is why we always take a CBCT scan to measure bone height and density. Often, even after years in dentures, the bone is adequate for All-on-4 without grafting.
What if I don’t have enough bone for All-on-4? We assess this with a CBCT scan. If bone height is borderline, the two tilted implants at the back of an All-on-4 can often reach into available bone without needing a graft. If grafting is genuinely needed, we’ll quote it separately and discuss the timeline and cost with you upfront.
Am I a candidate for “same-day teeth”? Possibly. Same-day teeth (temporary bridge fitted on surgery day) are possible for most All-on-4 cases. A few patients (those with very poor bone or recent extractions with active infection) may need to wait a week or two for swelling to settle before the temporary teeth are fitted. We’ll confirm at your consultation based on your CBCT and clinical assessment.
Why does All-on-4 cost less than placing 6–8 single implants? Because you’re placing fewer implants (four vs six or eight), requiring less bone removal and less surgical time. The prosthetic (teeth) is also a single bridge rather than eight individual crowns, which is more cost-effective to design and manufacture. The clinical outcome is equally excellent — you get a fixed, non-removable full set of teeth.
How long will my prosthetic (the teeth) last? The implants themselves should function for 20+ years. The porcelain crown may need replacement after 10–15 years due to normal wear — similar to your natural teeth. Some patients’ prosthetics last 20+ years with excellent care; others may need adjustments or repairs sooner. Gum health and regular professional cleaning are the biggest factors in longevity.
Do you offer finance for All-on-4? Yes. We offer 0% interest over 12 months and longer-term plans (24–60 months) at low APR through Tabeo. Treatment plans over £1,000 qualify. The application is paperless, takes five minutes, and won’t affect your credit score (soft check only).
What if I need both upper and lower All-on-4? Both arches are placed in a single surgical appointment under sedation. You’ll spend one day in the chair and leave with temporary teeth on both arches. Cost is typically £20,000 (£10,000 per arch, no discount applied). Recovery is the same as for a single arch.
