FAQs
What is a root canal treatment?
How does the tooth interior become infected?
The most common cause of this type of infection is untreated tooth decay. If left untreated, tooth decay can infect the tooth’s interior or the ‘dental pulp’, threatening the health and stability of the tooth.
The tooth can become loose in the mouth, and patients often experience toothache or an increase in sensitivity. In severe cases, patients may also experience an abscess or swelling.
What happens during the treatment?
In most cases, a root canal treatment can be completed in one appointment. In more complex cases, and especially those where a crown is needed to restore the tooth to full function, the treatment may take 2-3 appointments to complete.
We’ll apply local anaesthetic at the start of the treatment, ensuring you’re pain-free throughout and then we’ll clean the root canals, remove the infection that is present, and fully disinfect the tooth.
We’ll then use a rubber-type material to fill the tooth in, which will restore and repair it while also preventing any further reinfection.
Will my tooth hurt after the treatment?
It’s normal to experience some pain or discomfort in the area that’s been treated, especially once your local anaesthetic has worn off. In most cases, you can take some paracetamol or ibuprofen, and the pain will recede.
