FAQs

What are metal braces?

Metal braces have been around for a long time, so the chances are you’ve heard of – and seen – them before. Fixed to the front of the teeth, this orthodontic treatment uses brackets and archwires to gently move the teeth into a straighter, more aligned position.

The braces will be adjusted every 6-8 weeks when you will come into the practice so that we can perform the adjustments and make sure everything is working as it should.

How long does the treatment take?

Most patients wear their braces for 18-24 months.

Do braces hurt?

The braces can be a little uncomfortable when you first have them applied, as well as when you have them adjusted. This is because they are applying the gentle force and pressure that is necessary to move the teeth into better alignment.

The brackets can also cause some friction and discomfort on the inside of the mouth, but we do have ways to help mitigate this.

Will I have to use a special toothbrush?

Yes, you will have to use a toothbrush that can clean between the brackets and archwires. Keeping your teeth and mouth in tip-top condition is of the utmost importance when wearing braces, and we’ll be sure you have everything you need in order to do so when you have them placed.

Are there any foods I’ll need to avoid?

You will want to avoid biting into any particularly chewy or very crunchy foods as these could damage the braces and even cause the archwires or brackets to come loose.

Will I have to wear a retainer afterwards?

Yes, we always recommend using a retainer once an orthodontic treatment is complete. This is to help ensure your teeth remain in their newly aligned positions and doesn’t revert to their original positions.
